When you think of pipeline infrastructure, sewer systems are probably one of the first things you think of. While there are many types of pipelines, sewer pipe is definitely an unsung hero. It quietly does what it’s supposed to do. Until the day it can’t because it needs repairs. The good news is that technology such as CIPP gives us simple ways to make those necessary repairs.

In this guide, we share some modern technology options that can be used when it comes to sewer pipe repair.

Hydro Jetting

If a sewer line needs to be cleaned out, this is a great option. Hydro jetting simply forces high-pressure water through a pipeline. The result typically cleans the pipeline and breaks through any blockages within the system. Hydro jetting is a great trenchless option for cleaning or clearing blockages. It’s not a good option for cracks or leaks, though, as the pressure might worsen those issues in some cases.

When something like tree roots are blocking the lines, count on this versatile method to get the system up and running again.

CIPP Trenchless Repair

Trenchless methods are the absolute best in modern technology. When you can take something like cured-in-place pipe and make a repair, it’s a huge win. The ability to make needed repairs without excavation or digging has major benefits. There is more than one type of trenchless repair, but this is the most common.

Cured in place pipe can be applied through an access point or a manhole. This allows minimal disruption. The resin-coated liner is pushed into the pipe and placed with technology. It is seamless and will adhere and harden. The result is like a brand-new pipe within the pipe. It does not disrupt pipe flow. It recycles the materials already in place and provides 50+ more years of service.

The other common method is pipe bursting. With this method, the old pipe is broken apart as the new pipe is put into place. It’s best used for heavily deteriorated pipes and still eliminates excavation.

CCTV Inspections

When we need to see inside a pipeline, we let technology help. CCTV inspection allows us to insert a camera into any pipeline. We use that camera to inspect the condition and determine what needs to happen from there. We can see the problem right away and address it quickly. This allows for faster repairs. Forget the digging!

Robotic Technology

Another great option is robotics. These are helpful in large-diameter pipelines. The robotics have cameras, sensors, and more. We place the robot through a manhole and navigate it with controls. We can complete repairs with precision and ease. Plus, with video technology, it’s accurate and efficient. Robots are quick and reliable. Consider places that are hard to access. With CIPP, we have much easier ways to get to them.
