The Requirements for Becoming a CIPP Lining Technician

The regulations for a CIPP lining technicians vary from state to state, with some requiring additional training or advanced certification. Since the Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) technique is relatively new, appropriate training standards are still being developed and improved. However, relevant certification and prior field experience are crucial to becoming a successful CIPP lining technician.

General CIPP Lining Technician Requirements

CIPP lining technicians work as part of a team, with new team members typically having less experience and no full certification. Therefore, certain qualities and credentials must be considered for a CIPP technician position. A high school diploma or GED is almost always necessary, as it provides potential employers with a verified work history and verifies basic math and reading skills. These skills are essential to the job of a CIPP technician.

In addition to a diploma, you’ll need necessary local certifications since they vary across regions. Some employers allow new hires a month or two to obtain certification.

CIPP is a physically demanding process that requires lifting heavy equipment regularly, so you should be comfortable lifting seventy-five pounds at a time. However, brute strength alone is insufficient. You’ll need a professional and polite attitude when working on homes and businesses and a strong work ethic.

PACP

Pipeline Assessment and Certification Program (PACP) certification is one of the essential requirements for CIPP lining technicians. Since CIPP is a relatively new procedure, few standardized certification systems are available. PACP certification verifies a technician’s ability to identify pipeline problems, a significant part of any sewer/plumbing technician training.

The program ensures that technicians can identify problems and evaluate and manage them.

PACP is especially important in CIPP because it involves closed-circuit camera evaluation. CIPP technicians must understand how to use closed-circuit camera technology and analyze the images the camera sends back. It is the primary way a technician determines whether a pipe can withstand CIPP, making it a vital requirement.

Becoming a CIPP lining technician is an interesting challenge, but you must be prepared to undertake it. Ensure you meet the educational requirements and are ready to learn more on your way to completing certification.

CIPP requires customer service skills, so practice working with people as much as possible. Since CIPP is replacing many traditional pipe replacement methods, you can establish a great career if you are willing to accept the challenge.
